KiNZ Myers Park is located in Queen Street, in the heart of the Auckland City surrounded by commercial and retail activities.
At KiNZ Myers Park we provide families with the choice of sessional and full day care for children aged between three months and six years of age. We are licensed for 50 children and currently have a waiting list of just over 100 children.
The Myers family bequeathed the building to the children of Auckland in 1916 and the centre is administered under the umbrella of the Auckland Kindergarten Association. In 2002 Myers Kindergarten as it was previously named, converted from sessional care to a centre catering for families who required full day care and education.
Myers Park, which is a popular gathering area for the people who work or frequent neighbouring businesses, surrounds the centre. A children’s playground is a popular feature in the park. A parking area is for KiNZ parents is located behind the building.
The families of children attending KiNZ Myers Park either live in the central business area of Auckland or commute from outer suburbs and work near by our centre. We have a diverse range of ethnicities attending the centre and several of our teachers are fluent in more than one language. We are a popular choice with teacher training providers and often have student teachers gaining practical experience.
The centre has two separated areas; an Under 2's and an Over 2's area, offering developmental appropriate environments for each age group however the areas are only separated by a low fence so children have opportunities to interact and can visit each others play areas if they choose thus fostering the development of ‘tuakana teina’ – reciprocal relationships between younger and older children.
Sleep rooms provide a quiet restful area for children. A Cook is employed to provide nutritional meals made on the premises and children eat in a dining room adjacent to the kitchen.
We have a teaching staff of 10; three Under 2 Teachers and six Over 2 Teachers. The Centre Manager who organises the operations of KiNZ also spends several hours each day working with children in both areas.
Our Philosophy At KiNZ Myers Park we aspire to assist all children to develop a sense of themselves as competent learners, within a positive learning environment, now and for the rest of their lives.
- We will give children the opportunity to develop knowledge and an understanding of the cultural heritages of both partners of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
- We believe that young children learn best through play experiences. Teachers provide a variety of experiences that challenge and stimulate further learning opportunities.
- The principles and strands of Te Whaariki (the New Zealand early childhood curriculum) are the foundation of our programme.
- Children are encouraged to make choices to experiment, explore and have fun in well-resourced curriculum areas.
- We value children’s individual strengths, interests and uniqueness.
- We believe in the importance of planning and reviewing our teaching practice to extend and enhance every child’s capabilities.
- We believe that ongoing professional development and support is essential for teachers to demonstrate growth.
- We believe in the importance of creating an attractive and child-oriented environment and our staff act as positive role models in achieving this.
- We promote respectful, open and honest relationships between children, parents/whanau, and staff.
- We believe New Zealand has a unique multicultural heritage and we endeavour to reflect this in our environment and programme.
